Socratic Seminar Questions-5th Period (6th Period see below)

Tomorrow is the Socratic seminar on “The Road Not Taken,” “Seven Ages of Man,” and Ecclesiastes 3:1-8.” Below are the questions for the seminar:

“The Road Not Taken”

1. What is this poem about?

2. What are some advantages/disadvantages of taking “a less traveled path” in life?

3. Do you believe the human race analyzes options too greatly or not greatly enough? Give examples.

4. Sometimes taking the more traveled path is safer and may lead to better results in life. If you were in the narrator’s position in this poem, and only one path led to success (you don’t know which), which path would you take?

“Seven Ages of Man”

1. What is this poem about?

2. Do you believe that one’s entire life can be explained in 7 stages? Why or why not?

3. Which ages does the speaker describe most positively? Negatively? Explain.

4. Do you think the speaker can accurately speak about stages he has yet to experience? Explain.

“Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

1. What is this poem about?

2. The lines “a time of war and a time of peace” suggest that war and peace will always exist in our world. Do you agree that war cannot be stopped and that peace cannot last forever?

3. Do you agree that there is a right or scheduled time for everything? Explain.

4. Discuss the comparisons in the poem and explain how this ancient passage can be applied to our lives today.

1. What is this poem about?

3. Explain the significance of the line “All the world’s a stage…”

4. Do you think the speaker can accurately speak about stages he has yet to experience? Explain.

“Ecclesiastes 3:1-8”

1. What is this poem about?

2. The lines “a time of war and a time of peace” suggest that war and peace will always exist in our world. Do you agree that war cannot be stopped and that peace cannot last forever?

3. Do you agree that there is a right or scheduled time for everything?

4. The poem has negative and positive aspects. What can you relate to in this poem? What lines are most powerful? Explain.

The meetings were great today! Some of you asked about extra handouts for role sheets and journal sheets. Look on the College Bound page to get those. Remember, for the next meeting you must come prepared with your pre-group journal and role sheet COMPLETE!

Vocabulary Test for Unit Two words is Tuesday, Nov. 11. Remember, you will need ALL of your vocabulary cards for this test.

Poetry Place Assignment is due Friday, Nov. 14th

College Bound Lit Circles will meet in class on Monday, Nov. 17th

Bring Mom to School Day is Nov. 17th. Be sure to include your mom in your Lit Circle discussion. Maybe have her read the book with you!

Starting Wednesday, you need to bring your literature book to class everyday.

Bring your Animal Farm book to class on Tuesday, Nov. 11th.

Update!

Unit Test on The Odyssey is Friday, September 19th!  The test will cover The Odyssey, all notes taken in association with The Odyssey, all Greek mythology studied, and MLA format notes. You will recieve a study guide as well.

Booknotes are due on Tuesday, September 23rd!

The final set of vocabulary cards is due on Friday, September 19th. The vocabulary test will be next week.
